So
the old saying goes... "the dog is a man's best friend."
And the Portuguese Water Dog
is just that. In fact, to be more specific, the Portuguese Water
Dog is a fishermen's best friend. Long ago, this breed of dog
could be found on the coast of Portugal helping fishermen herd
fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle and of course act as a guard
dog when needed.
The Poodle is the closest relative to
the PWD.
Like Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs are extremely smart, they
often have curly coats, have webbed toes for swimming, and they
don't shed. Portie's, as they have been nicknamed, are highly
intelligent and they make a wonderful companion. Because Portuguese
Water Dogs are active they do need daily exercise, however if
properly exercised they are fine with lying down when told to
do so... they too are very trainable and they should have obedience
training for the first year. PWD's are desirable for those who
have allergies since they don't shed. Another great thing about
this breed is that they do well with children over the age of
5 and are fine with other dogs living in the home as well.
Ted Kennedy owns three Portuguese Water Dogs and President Barack
Obama and his wife Michelle will be adopting a PWD in April 2009
for their daughters Malia and Sasha.
